Generous landlords praised for discounting rent to tenants

A not-for-profit educational charity that acts as a lettings agency has praised private landlords for contributing to a rent discount scheme.

Sulets in Leicester announced on January 21 that it would give "a substantial rent discount” to all student tenants, equivalent to roughly four weeks rent.

At the time Sulets CEO, Irving Hill, said: “We are very aware of the impact that the current lockdown is having on students. As an educational charity, with a clear mission to do the best for students, we are committed to helping where we can at this time, as we did in 2020.”

Sulets proposed that the discount would be funded from its own surplus but numerous landlords have now contributed to the scheme out of their own generosity.

A statement from Sulets says: “This is welcome news for all stakeholders and promotes landlords in a more positive light, particularly with endless negative press regarding landlords over the years.

“Sulets would like to thank all landlords who have been in touch and donated to the discount scheme. It goes hand in hand with the Sulets mission and values to raise student housing standards while being fair and transparent.”

Meanwhile Unite Students, the UK’s largest manager and developer of purpose-built accommodation for the student sector, is extending its 50 per cent rent discount scheme across the country until March 8.

Eligible students who pay their rent directly to Unite Students, and who successfully applied for the original rent discount announced on January 11, will now receive the additional 50 per cent rent discount automatically, providing they have not returned to their Unite Students accommodation since January 18.

The three-week rent discount extension is being announced in light of the continuation of lockdown restrictions to at least March 8, according to the Prime Minister.

In addition, the four-week complimentary summer tenancy announced by Unite Students on January 11 is still applicable to students with a contract end date prior to August 1.

It's not for profit but funding this from surplus. How do you get s surplus if you don't make profits? Possibly from tax payers?
